Mazut, sometimes referred to as fuel oil or heavy oil, is a heavy petroleum product that results from the residue of the crude oil distillation process. Due to its high viscosity and heaviness compared to other petroleum products, mazut has specific uses:
Energy and Heat Production:
The primary application of mazut is in energy and heat production. It is used as fuel in power plants, industrial factories, ships, and some industrial furnaces. Mazut generates a high amount of energy upon combustion due to its significant content of carbon and hydrogen.
Maritime Transport:
In maritime transport, mazut is used as fuel for the diesel engines of ships. However, due to environmental concerns and pollutants resulting from mazut combustion, its use in this sector is decreasing.
Chemical Product Manufacturing:
Mazut may also be used as a raw material in the production of certain chemical and industrial products.
Building Heating:
In some regions with limited access to natural gas, mazut may be used for heating buildings and providing warmth. Due to its heaviness and high viscosity, mazut requires pre-heating to improve flow and spray better in combustion systems. Additionally, mazut may contain high levels of sulfur, which can lead to the production of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide upon combustion. For this reason, the use of mazut is subject to stringent regulations in some countries to control air pollution.
